In
March 2003 we began refurbishing the old foundry at Maple and
Cornwall Streets in downtown Bellingham. This historic structure,
built in 1891 on the original water front, retains its old-growth
fir flooring and roof timbers. It also houses some of the original
molds and patterns used in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s.
We plan to incorporate these into on-site exhibits about the
history of the building and development of the area.
The
present-day building includes 5,000 square feet and houses the
Imagine! Art Studio, flexible classroom spaces for three multi-age
groups (7 to 9 year olds, 10 to 12 year olds, and 13 to 15 year
olds), and a large-motor skill play area, as well as meeting
and exhibit space. Future renovation may include a wood workshop
and pottery studio in the basement.
Our
proximity to downtown Bellingham allows us to explore, interact
and learn at area libraries and museums, local government offices,
other schools, elder residential facilities, the YMCA, Farmer’s
Market, and retail establishments. Our location next to the
Interurban Trail also gives us easy access to miles of hiking/biking
trails, as well as to Boulevard Park, Fairhaven Historic District
and Marine Park.
